The local research unit of Roma Tre tackles the subject of habit and custom with a plural approach that follows two main disciplinary perspectives: historical and theoretical. First, the historical perspective aims at reconstructing in a broad and systematic manner theories of habit throughout different phases of the history of western philosophy, while paying particular attention to the contribution they can offer to current debates. Transdisciplinarity is inherent to this framework and opens the door to further fields of investigation in psychology, sociology, literature and the arts in general. Second, stemming from pragmatist philosophy and its intertwining with the cognitive sciences, the theoretical perspective tackles the question of habits in the conceptual framework of the philosophy of mind. With an eye to bringing to the fore the most relevant aspects relating to present-day issues, this approach takes into account the latest theories of cognition and current discoveries in neuroscientific research.
